An ode to Black men & Black male friendships for Black History Month.
May you find your freedom in self-expression, your interpersonal relationships and Black love in all of its forms. May you dare to claim the sky in all that you do, singing your own songs of freedom.
This is for you.
I wanted to develop a concept surrounding Black male friendships, specifically focusing in/around Brooklyn neighborhoods. The cultural norm that Black men are to exist without love and platonic intimacy within their interpersonal relations should continued to be questioned.
Bedford Stuyvesant is a Brooklyn neighborhood with such rich history of Black culture in many forms. Some of hip-hops greats, to film legends have roots in this community. I wanted this concept to exist in an area with these deep roots, to juxtapose what assumptions and feelings Bed-Stuy is known for, for some. Capturing images on the streets of Bed-Stuy, in bodegas, outside of the Marcy Housing Projects seemed fitting to truly exemplify this body of work.
